If you're a Harry Potter fan, then this news is bigger than Christmas. The record-breaking, award-winning West End production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is opening at Melbourne's Princess Theatre in 2019.
Yes, seriously. Melbourne will be the show's third stop after London and New York, so expect Potter fans from all over the country to apparate here when it hits town.
If you don't know a lot about the play, then here's the lowdown: it's a sequel to the series, based on a story written by JK Rowling herself and adapted for the stage by Jack Thorne. It's presented in two parts, which you can watch on the same day or across two consecutive evenings.
It's long, but on all accounts, spectacular, moving, and true to the Potter universe and Rowling's vision. Here's what Time Out London had to say:
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is an absolute hoot, a joyous, big-hearted, ludicrously incident-packed and magic-heavy romp that has to stand as one of the most unrelentingly entertaining things to hit the West End. Writer Jack Thorne, director John Tiffany and a world-class team have played a blinder; if the two-part, five-hour-plus show is clearly a bit on the long side, it’s forgivable. The Cursed Child emphatically exists for fans of Harry Potter, and much of its power derives from the visceral, often highly emotional impact of feeling that you’re in the same room as Rowling’s iconic characters.
We won't give too much away about the plot, but audiences can expect to find the gang 19 years on from the Battle of Hogwarts. While Harry himself grapples with the troubles of his past, his son Albus deals with living in the shadow of his famous father.
If you've read the script (which is available to buy in bookstores) you'll have wondered how all those acts of magic are brought to life on stage. Time Out London described the show's special effects as "astonishing" – we'll have to wait and see to find out exactly what they mean.
