The National is a prime example of the modern pubs making Richmond a great place to eat and drink. Handmade duck dumplings are spiked with fresh ginger and eggplant is served as little cubes of simple pleasure – crisp breadcrumb encasing creamy interior, with miso and citrus mayo for dipping. Coconut-braised beef short ribs rest on a bed of steamed Chinese broccoli and are piled with aromatic shiso leaves. The slow-cooked meat is balanced by a light curry broth perfect for soaking in fluffy rice. Drinks are fun, too, with well balanced cocktails like the My Thai with coconut-infused rum, pear, lime and lemongrass, and the wine list sees Grüner Veltliner and Albariño alongside the usual suspects. Top it off with cheery and diligent service and you’ve got an Asian eating experience worth your while.
