It’s been a good summer for Preston locals. First, we learned that the legendary Preston Market has been saved from closure (until 2028, at least), and now it's been revealed that the Preston Hotel is opening a hip new rooftop bar with scenic city views.
Sitting high against a mural of wall art by local artist Sebastian Fransz, Lulu Bar will be a gathering place for sunset Spritzes, tapas-style share plates, DJ sets, pizza dinners and everything in between. Though there is no shortage of buzzy drinking dens around Preston (Moon Dog World, Tallboy and Moose, The Keys, the list goes on...), a rooftop haven of this scope seems a timely addition to the neighbourhood.
“Preston and its surrounds are a beautiful thriving community and I wanted to create something they are proud of, that's theirs – their Siglo, their Naked for Satan, their iconic, cool meeting place where they can go a bit Gatsby,” says owner Ben Niall.
Gatsby, you say? Well, with slushie cocktails and approachable bites like sticky pork ribs on the menu, Lulu Bar is unlikely to feel too posh for a casual happy hour jaunt. But with future events in the works such as outdoor cinema screenings, art exhibitions and wine tastings, it’s clear this bright new community hub will be treating its guests to a whole lot more than just booze and bar snacks.
In contrast to the old-school pub vibes downstairs, Lulu has the stylings of a somewhat more chic affair, with a vertical garden and sofas for soaking up the sun, as well as an intimate indoor cocktail bar for when you feel like taking a wander inside. Highlights of the drinks list include a native Hibiscus Pink Spritz with rhubarb, pomegranate and strawberry gum, and a classic Espresso Martini crafted from hot-extracted Brazilian coffee, with vino and local craft beers rounding out the offerings.
Lulu Bar celebrates its opening night on Friday, February 9, with tunes from Northside DJ, Luqman. Bookings are recommended and you can nab a spot by calling Preston Hotel or messaging the bar’s Instagram page.
