Footscray's Bar Josephine is the local dive that every neighbourhood wishes it had. Rustically furnished with used bus seats and shelves of quirky knick-knacks like worn books, this watering hole feels just like a good mate's living room – if your good mate knew how to mix a dang good cocktail and had rivers of ice-cold craft beer on tap.
Once a bar manager at Cinema Nova’s cruisy wine bar, owner Aaron Donato opened Bar Josephine as a place where people could chill, listen to music and work on creative projects. It’s named after Aaron’s grandmother Guiseppa (Josephine), and many of the quirky knick-knacks dotted around the place could be described as family heirlooms.
Expect quality banter courtesy of the bar staff and local regulars, and an atmosphere that feels welcoming and approachable no matter what time of the week you visit (this ever-reliable haunt is open 1pm to 1am every single day.)
Beer is the main name of the game here, and the bar showcases some of the west's finest tipples. You can find anything from a stout to a sour, an IPA to a lager. A wine list is also available too and though being short, it certainly is sweet on the ol' hip pocket.
But we haven't even got to the best bit yet – the beer garden! Perennially vibing (but obviously best enjoyed in the warmer months), this fairy-light dotted courtyard is a secret alcove in the 'cray for late night gossip sessions with mates. Thanks for being you, Bar Josephine!
