This renegade veggie garden located behind Luna Park is run entirely by volunteers. The former lawn bowls green is now an organic and chemical-free fruit, veggie, herb and flower garden, with more than 140 individual plots in action.
Veg Out prides itself on shared land, offering community members a chance to work together, and is a leafy green oasis away from one of Melbourne’s busiest tourist spots.
Explore the garden and you’ll find spouting green basil, stalks of lavender, vibrant cherry tomatoes, butter yellow squash and more. Along with the gardens, you also find some furry and feathered friends, with rabbits, chicken and quails meandering around.
Besides nourishing through the produce, the site also provides fertile ground for creativity, with artist studio space, sculptures and art pieces dotted throughout the garden. You’ll also find a wishing well, a compost heap and plenty of park benches.
Want to get involved? The first step is becoming a friend of the garden, and helping out at working bees, which run on the first Sunday of every month. You will also find the Veg Out St Kilda Farmers’ Markets just next door at Peanut Farm Reserve on the first Saturday of each month.
