Update: NGV has extended its opening hours for the final week of The House of Dior – see below.
The National Gallery of Victoria's 2017 fashion blockbuster is a Melbourne-exclusive exhibition created by the gallery in collaboration with the House of Dior.
Founded by Christian Dior in 1946, the house is best known for the 'new look', a voluminous and ultra-feminine silhouette that came to define post-war dressing.
This exhibition focuses explicitly on Dior's Haute Couture creations – so craftsmanship will be central. The garments made in the Christian Dior atelier often take hundreds of hours, and dozens of skilled hands to assemble. Consequently, a piece of Haute Couture costs tens, if not hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Which is to say, House of Dior: Seventy Years of Haute Couture is your best bet for getting up close and personal with this rarefied fusion of art, design and fashion.
