Housed in the ever-glorious Abbotsford Convent grounds, c3 has multiple galleries and encourages artists to take risks. They base their model on both that of a traditional publicly-funded gallery and that of an artist-run-initiative – it’s a massive space and there’s always plenty of buzz, but their ethos is a community-led and artist-run philosophy.
The gallery showcases some of Melbourne’s best emerging art and curatorial practice, as well as design, architecture, fashion, performance, sound work and community projects. It opened in 2008 in the basement of the Convent building as the site’s first gallery space. Since then, they’ve supported countless local artists, and shown some stellar work. Plus, there’s plenty to take in at the Convent – if you’re there for one of their markets, be sure to pop into the gallery.
