When searching for the best staycation destinations in the UK, you may not expect to find the Kent seaside town of Margate to be inching its way up the list. But after taking one look at its quirky shops, incredible restaurants and vintage beachfront arcade, you’ll soon know why. This increasingly popular location has its old-school charm and close proximity to London on its side; nowadays, people are even more inclined to seek out a cheap holiday option that still promises a frolick in the sand and an escape from the city, and the gentrification of Margate has led it to become a major box-ticker when it comes to this set of requirements.

And what will make your decision to choose Margate as a staycation spot even easier? It’s selection of stunning Airbnbs – and we’ve rounded up the best ones we could find to help speed up the booking process. And the beauty of this Kent gem is that you can pop down for the weekend and still make it back home in time to meal prep for Monday’s office lunch.

The best Airbnbs in Margate

1. The upside-down house by the beach

We visited compact home packs an abundance of seaside charm through bright colours, eclectic furnishings and thoughtful touches – but from a fresh, modern perspective. You won’t find anything drab or dowdy about this place as, much like the town itself, the house has been lovingly revived with trendy details and fixtures, which are most prevalent in the slick kitchen and bathroom. The exposed brick walls add to the character of the property, while the open-plan layout gives the illusion of extra space. The quirks even begin before you’ve crossed the threshold, as the yellow front door sits on the second floor (hence the name). Come the evening you can either turn to the board games, HDTV or outdoor dining area for an al fresco nightcap. The French doors leading into the garden let a bunch of light into the house, making it an even more delightful environment to lounge around in.

Mood? Cute and stylish.
Location perks? A short stroll from the beach, Dreamland and Old Town.
Budget range? A little extra for an extra lovely stay.

Filled with just enough bits and bobs to make the space seem homely without being cluttered, and just big enough to feel cosy instead of cramped, there’s no reason not to love this place. Everything looks shiny and new, with flawless furniture pieces and a glossy kitchen. The second bedroom has bunk beds, making it ideal for families with younger children. Prepare to jot down interior design tips as you cuddle up by the log burner in front of the Smart TV (Netflix included).

4. The minimalist beach house with a balcony

If you’re only in Margate for the beach, the views and the peaceful atmosphere, this beautiful house (designed by an award-winning architect) is sure to fit the bill. It’s situated right on the sea wall, a mere 30 seconds from the sand. The beach-facing balcony has chairs for lounging as well as a table and bench set, meaning you can read, relax and even dine out there if you’re that reluctant to come inside. But no matter how much you love spending time in the open air, we have a feeling you’ll still be drawn indoors by the cosy sofa and big TV come the evening. The glass doors let in a tonne of natural light, and the minimalist design also contributes to making the main room feel spacious and airy. The bedrooms are as bright and modern as the kitchen and living area, and there’s even a bath if you need a sudsy soak.

Mood? Contemporary beach hut.

The Wes Anderson aesthetic seems to be all the rage these days; exhibit A? This funky Airbnb in Kent. Fitted with all sorts of aesthetically-pleasing furniture, it has a stark and somewhat overwhelming colour palette. There are two bedrooms, designed in the most Anderson-esque manner: one is decked out in a severe pink and orange colour scheme, with a massive circular bed – perhaps more Hannah Montana than The Grand Budapest Hotel. The second room, suitably named the ‘mermaid room’, has bright-blue underwater decor with the bed tucked into a sea shell-shaped wall cut-out.

Mood? As quirky (and colourful) as it gets.
Location perks? Opposite Margate Main Sands and above Buoy and Oyster restaurant.
Budget range? Pretty cheap if split between five for a short stay.

6. The contemporary apartment with sea views

This refurbished two-bedroom ground floor apartment is one of the most contemporary Airbnbs you’ll find in this characterful seaside town. While most of the holiday homes on offer complement the boho, shabby chic reputation of Margate itself, this one is bringing things bang up to date with a sleek grey and white kitchen with all the top mod cons. The bedrooms are a little more traditional, sporting an adorable nautical theme and wooden furnishings. The garden has a BBQ and seating for quality time spent outdoors.

Mood? A wow-factor refurbishment.
Location perks? Opposite Margate’s Winter Gardens with sea views, while also being close to Turner Gallery, Harbour Arms and the town centre’s bars and restaurants.
Budget range? An amazing price for a two-bed.

7. The pretty little apartment by the beach

This stunning apartment is what staycations are made of, and proves you don’t have to venture far for a top-quality Airbnb by the beach. This could potentially be a dangerous outlook, as it may mean you never want to leave, but we have to admit that it’s certainly a place you could imagine living in; everything is modern and on-trend, from the fixtures to the furniture. But there’s still a warmth, mainly provided by the wooden floors, fluffy rug and hints of dark blue. The glass doors at the back of the living area open out onto the patio, bring the outside in. The private suntrap is a blissful oasis, kitted out with plants and furniture that will be calling your name when you’re looking for the perfect place to enjoy your morning coffee.

Mood? Home away from home.
Location perks? A two-minute walk to the beach and a 10-minute stroll along the promenade into Margate.
Budget range? One of the cheapest properties of this quality.
