For those who have never seen the film version, 'East Is East' is about a Pakistani chip-shop owner, George Khan, wants to give his children a strict Muslim upbringing. Tensions rise as his English wife, Ella, is caught in the middle, with her loyalties divided between her husband and her children's free will.
Ayub Khan Din's quite brilliant comedy drama, set in 1970s Salford, features both the playwright and Jane Horrocks as Ella. By his own admission, Din's play is highly auobiographical, so what a treat to have him effectively playing his own father! And how delightful to see Horrocks back on the stage.
This is one not to miss.
