There's nothing quite like a pizza. That combination of dough, tomato, cheese and your favourite toppings is hard to beat when you just need something you know is going to satisfy your hunger and excite your taste buds. And whilst it's often said that there's really no such thing as a bad pizza, some are just spectacular. Pizza is now a respectable option within the menus of some of Manchester's best restaurants and both Ancoats and the Northern Quarter have led the way in turning a pizza meal into a great dining experience. Here are some of the best in the city.

Now with two city-centre sites to their name, Rudy's is really the place that kick-started the pizza revolution in Manchester, turning the humble fast food into a much finer experience. Was a time when you could barely get inside the Ancoats venue so it's a relief that a second has extended the opportunity to taste the finest pizzas in the city.

The good people behind Common have added a third location for their pizza branch, Nell's. The new development opposite Canal Street, Kampus, is an ideal spot and the interior matches the m site it occupies. The pizzas are delicious and offer a small but excellent range, the cheese and onion pie pizza being a real stand out.

Here's a fantastic pizza joint in Manchester's Northern Quarter thats entirely vegan. Yes we mean the wine too. The menu offers a great selection of pizzas with remarkable toppings so  don't worry when you see things like 'crumbled sausage' as a topping, you're in totally plant-based territory. even the vegan cheese surpasses what you think it will taste like. These are just great pizzas in a fantastic setting.

In Chorlton, Double Zero dish out stunning pizzas from their 450c oven to the delight of locals favouring the Neopolitan style of thinner, crisper crusts. It's all about an authentic taste here, pizzas being cooked for just 90 seconds. And as an added bonus, you can take your own booze.

So here's the thing with Mackie Mayor. As a food hall, it's a stunner of a place and there's no doubt that the range of tasty treats on offer from the various food outlets is fantastic. But there's just something about Honest Crust's superb pizzas that keeps you going back for more. Fresh, seasonal toppings and that fantastic sourdough base pack powerful pizza-pie punch, so much so that you'll find yourself heading towards the smell of that pizza oven every time you visit.
