Thank heavens for the British Film Institute and their ongoing work in caring for old film as well as making new ones.
Take a look at this restored piece of film from 1901, narrated by the restorer herself, showing scenes on the streets of Manchester in the year when the first electric tramlines were put down in the city which would soon replace the era of the horse which you see in the film.
Throughout the summer that year, screenings of a collection of films called 'Life in Manchester' were shown daily in what was then the St James Theatre and Exhibition Hall on Oxford Street (pictured above), which is still there, albeit with a different purpose.
In the film you get to see the man who put the films on, showman A.D. Thomas, giving tickets away to publicise the screenings.
It's Market Street, but not as we know it...
