If the New Year sales have prompted you to buy a new bed or seek a more seductive night’s slumber via a new mattress, one of the things you’re bound to be thinking of is how long it will last. Better go for a visit to Ordsall Hall before you make your choice and see if you can read the label on the mattress of their new exhibit.
Last month, the oldest bed in Britain was returned there after nearly 500 years away.
It was made for newlyweds Sir John and Lady Anne Radclyffe in 1570, and has been put back in its place in the Hall’s Star Chamber, where its medieval Royal Crests and ornate carvings are now back on public display.
It’s looking remarkably good for something that’s nearly 500 years old.
