Manchester doesn’t do badly for tiki bars but The Liars Club is arguably where the formula is realised best. So much more than just a Zombie and Mai Tai haven, The Liars Club serves up a variety of tropical inspired cocktails and tiki variations on old classics, with crowd-pleasing sharers that become a party piece at the bar – think slurping pina coladas from a hollowed out pineapple and drinks served in novelty steins, treasure chests, barrels and more. It’s all a bit gimmicky, and it totally works.
With over 100 different rums from all corners of the Earth, staff at The Liars Club are completely besotted with the stuff, and it is this passion that gives the bar much of its charm. Alongside well-known brands like Bacardi, Havana, Captain Morgan’s and Sailor Jerry, the shelves are also stocked with the likes of the Dominican Republic’s Brugal and the menacing black spiced rum, Kraken.
To embrace the sweeter side of the spirit order the Mango Coco Loco, which blends Malibu and mango puree with condensed milk and lime, or try the Breakfast Club at the Liars – a wild mix of Wray and Nephew rum, nutmeg, condensed milk and honey, served in a paper milk carton. And if you want something a little less extravagant, there are choice beers, ciders and wines, too.
Weekends here are fun and busy, with Mancunians baited by the 4am finish, crazy amounts of rum and playful drinking vessels. Plus you’re pretty much guaranteed to catch some flames at some point, so sit back on a barrel and lap it all up.
