Following a major refurbishment and extending throughout its existing gallery space and into Whitworth Park itself, this beautiful gallery is now a perfect mix of old and new, taking the best of its Victorian origins and adding a modern section that beautifully reflects the variety of work on display inside.
Having been closed for several years, the re-opening shows, from Cornelia Parker's astonishing collection to Sarah Lucas and her cheeky 'Tits in Space', through to the sublime and moving beauty of gunpowder work from Cai Guo-Qiang, were internationally significant and the gallery continues to program with an international ambition.
But it's the space itself that impresses as much as the work within. With great sensitivity to history, nature and the surroundings, this new version of the Whitworth leaps way beyond its former position as a minor partner to the Manchester Art Gallery.
It is now truly world-class.
