British artist Stanley Spencer spent much of the First World War working as a soldier in a hospital, and this colection of large scale canvasses reflect his own experiences of that time. Spencer depicted the banal daily life that, in comparison to the battlefield, represented a ‘heaven in a hell of war.’
The paintings took six years to create and are generally considered to be Spencer's best work, so it's a rare chance to get close to some of the finest wartime work ever created, especially so as the pieces have never travelled so far north.
