The Carlos Amberes foundation dates back to 1594, when it was founded by a 16th-century Flemish benefactor. Today, as well as exhibitions and conferences, it hosts an average of 15 to 20 concerts per year in three cycles (one at the beginning of the year, another in May and one at the end of the year), both in its rather dingy basement and sometimes upstairs in a converted church, which is pretty but has bad acoustics. The programme tends to nod towards the music of the Low Countries.
