The best bars in Macau

The Old Taipa Tavern

Located by the Pak Tai Temple in Old Taipa Village, The Old Taipa Tavern (OTT) is like a portal to the European side of Macau. The venue has beautiful dark wood furnishing, warm cosy lighting, and a crowd that's friendly and welcoming. Head here to try a variety of craft beers from across the globe, including the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Hong Kong, and Australia. As for those looking for a bite to eat, OTT has a diverse selection of cuisines available ranging from Indian to Filipino to Mexican.

To make your evenings extra fun, join in on a game of Bar Wars on weekdays between 6pm to 9pm and challenge the bartender to a game of your choice – be it 'rock, paper, scissors', a dice game, or even just a coin flip. If you win, it's a free drink on the house! They also hold darts competitions every Monday, beer pong rounds every Wednesday with vouchers to be won, and often screen various sports games on the upper floor.

Dilligaf

Dilligaf used to be a Harley Davidson motorbike shop – until they decided to turn it into a bar, keep all the cool Harley decor, and just roll with it. Located near the Rua do Regedor main street in Old Taipa Village, it's a great hangout that attracts a diverse crowd. On busy nights, you'll often find folks spilling onto the pavement with their contagious energy. The monthly Bla Bla Language Exchange meetup is also held at Dilligaf, making it a fantastic spot to connect with locals, expats, and travellers from all walks of life.

If you want to snatch up a good deal, visit during lunch for their burger and salad deal that comes with a chilled beer, or during happy hour every day from 4pm to 7pm (or 9pm if you're in their WeChat group).

Prem1er Bar & Tasting Room

Prem1er is an Irish pub with a Mongolian twist. Sitting on the outskirts of Old Taipa Village, this local pub is run by an Irish-Mongolian couple, with the mix of their cultures shining through in the decor and selection of drinks. They specialise in Irish whiskies and offer over 30 homemade gins with unique flavours like ginger, tom yum, and Earl Grey, making it a great place to go for whiskey and gin enthusiasts.

What sets Prem1er apart is that they’re one of the few places in Macau that serve Mongolian vodka, which is incredibly smooth and easy to drink – think six-times distilled options like Soyombo and Chinggis Khan. The pub primarily attracts expats, university students, and, more recently, K-Pop fans! After members of the popular K-Pop group Seventeen graced the pub with their presence in 2023, Prem1er became an unlikely spot for fans to visit, hoping to sit in the same booth as their idols. The pub is also pet-friendly, so don’t be surprised if you find a canine companion beside you at the bar!

The vibe here is relaxed, and they stay open until 3am, so it's perfect for foodies looking to enjoy late-night sips with friends.

Inside, the spacious restaurant adorned with vintage artwork is great for larger groups of people. Although it’s just a few minutes away from the bustling Senado Square, Cathedral Cafe offers a pocket of respite within a culturally preserved building, and is great for all occasions: a quick coffee, lunch, post-work drinks, or dinner. Be sure to check out their food menu, which is full of family recipes inspired by the different countries the Portuguese visited on their sailing route from Portugal to Macau.

Tucked away on a quiet street near Kiang Wu Hospital is the city's best-kept secret – Funny Eye Tasting Room. A cafe by day and bar by night, this spot serves up their own craft beer brewed right here in the heart of the city. The beers are inspired by flavours of Macau like mango sticky rice ale and Hac Sa beach black lager, while the dim lighting creates a cosy atmosphere that makes the transition from cafe to bar feel effortless.
