Where to hear and go Christmas caroling in Los Angeles

Strike the harp and join the chorus with the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s Holiday Sing-Along at Walt Disney Hall. The seasonal program offers two performances hosted by Melissa Peterman, host, with performances from a choir, a jazz combo and on the massive pipe organ. A festive sing-along of holiday classics by the Angeles Chorale will include provided lyric sheets—just in case you forget how many fa-la-la-las are in “Deck the Halls.”

This season, we’ll leave the singing to the pros. Join the Los Angeles Master Chorale for all of your favorite holiday carols in concert at the iconic Walt Disney Concert Hall. Sixty two singers (ang special guest Jonathan Antoine) will belt out classics from around the globe (and traditional fixtures like “Silent Night,” “Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” “Carol of the Bells,” “Santa Claus is Coming to Town”) to get you in the festive spirit. Pulling out all the stops, the Disney Hall’s pipe organ will also participate in the magical concert—and you never know when Santa might make an appearance.

If you want a free taste of the L.A. Master Chorale’s holiday repertoire, head to the Music Center’s Jerry Moss Plaza for this half-hour show. Twenty singers will perform classics like “Deck the Halls,” “Frosty the Snowman” and “Joy to the World,” with no reservations required.

The Los Angeles Master Chorale performs one of the greatest choral works of all time, Handel’s Messiah, with the backing of an orchestra and under the joyful baton of artistic director Grant Gershon at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. Hallelujah, indeed. You’ll find two editions this year: the regular performance (Dec 18) and the sing-along (Dec 19).

Don something festive this December and head over to Royce Hall to listen to Christmas and Hanukkah classics. The 160-member Angel City Chorale, famous for its mish-mash of classical, pop, world, contemporary and gospel genres, is putting on “The More the Merrier,” its annual holiday concert. So get ready to hear a whole lot of fa-la-la-la-las at the holiday tradition—and join in during a “Silent Night” sing-along.

Listen to an afternoon of choral music and even let out a few “hallelujahs” for yourself during this two-part show at the Colburn School’s Zipper Hall. First Adrian Dunn and the Community School’s choral program tackle traditional and festive songs. Then, the Open Sing mixes the Colburn Concert Choir with members of the general public for the “Hallelujah Chorus” from Handel’s Messiah. If you’re 13 or older and interested in singing on stage (you’ll need to make at least one rehearsal) you can sign up here.

While Santa may still be working with his elves to load up his sleigh, you can relax and enjoy a Christmas Eve celebration at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. Gather up your friends and family and go hear L.A.’s biggest holiday show, which includes more than 20 choirs, music ensembles and dance troupes from all over the city. The free performance runs from 3 to 6pm and guests are encouraged to come and go as they please throughout the show.

Top hats, overcoats, puffy skirts and mittens. Oh, the joys of seeing Christmas carolers at your front door. Oh wait, you live in Los Angeles. Go get your dose of the holiday spirit at the Walt Disney Concert Hall with a Chanticleer Christmas. The Grammy-winning, 12-man ensemble from San Francisco will use its “orchestra of voices,” ranging from countertenor to bass, to perform an eclectic program of sounds for the holidays. These dudes are good. And you don’t even have to offer them hot cocoa and cookies.
