Located in the chic neighborhood of Eagle Rock, Los Angeles, The Workshop @ Haley Solar is a beautiful and creative space where students of all skill levels can take fun and informative fashion design classes. If you’re a total beginner, you may want to look into the Sewing 1 (Beginning) class. Here, participants will learn how to operate a sewing machine and get familiar with its basic functions as they create a tote bag from start to finish. Students will also receive several troubleshooting tips so they feel more comfortable powering up their sewing machine at home. There is also a Pattern Making 1 (Beginning) class that’s a great option for newcomers. This workshop teaches students how to take a fully made garment they already love and copy it into a pattern to customize and recreate.
There are also several courses available for more advanced students. The Pattern Making 2 (Intermediate) class focuses on copying a pattern and making simple alterations. Students need to bring an article of clothing with them that they’d like to convert to a pattern. In the Sewing 2 (Intermediate) workshop, students will make a garment they can take home and wear–a no closure kimono sleeve jacket. Students are encouraged to bring their own sewing machines to this class so they can continue to get comfortable with their personal tool, but it’s not required.
Classes at Haley Solar are frequently praised for being clear, concise, and informative. As one reviewer shared, “I had zero experience with a sewing machine and by the end I felt so comfortable.” If you and your friends are looking for a more unique way to spend time together, some participants also shared that the class was a fun group activity for things like birthdays and bachelorette parties. Others reported signing up for other classes right after their first one was complete because they felt like they learned so much. The instructors are described as patient, efficient, and helpful. Beginners also appreciated being able to take home their project and reported feeling excited to keep working on their craft.
