Piece by piece, the California Science Center is transitioning Space Shuttle Endeavour, a fuel tank and rocket boosters into a permanent, vertically-oriented home as part of its “Go for Stack” process. The aft skirts are already place, and now the solid rocket motors—the twin 15-story boosters that propelled the space shuttle upwards—are next. On October 11, you can watch them complete their journey from the Mojave Desert to the Exposition Park museum.
Here’s the schedule: The SRMs will exit the 110 around 7:30am to travel north along Figueroa Street from 43rd Place to Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard. They’ll pause there for a moment (8am) and then reach a ceremonial finish line at 39th Street at 8:45am, where the public is invited to watch (43rd Pl and 39th St). Afterwards, the free museum will open to guests an hour early at 9am.
To be clear, you won’t actually be able to see the motors lowered into the construction site, but their arrival at the museum is basically the only publicly accessible part of the Go for Stack process. If you’re planning on watching, consider Metro, though parking will be available at the museum’s Blue Structure (enter via Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard and Hoover Street).
