The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art is still a couple of years away from opening, but this fall the George Lucas-founded institution is hosting a free, 21-plus tarot and Lotería workshop.
On October 18 at Exposition Park’s South Lawn (that’s on the grassy side of the Natural History Museum), you’ll have the chance to create your own tarot cards and Lotería boards (an illustrated bingo-like game that traces back hundreds of years in Mexico). In addition, you can watch on-stage tarot readings, sign up for private readings and play Lotería for prizes, all while grabbing some grub from food trucks and listening to tunes from a dublab DJ.
So what does any of this have to do with the Lucas Museum? The narrative-focused institution has over 60 works from artist Alphonse Mucha, whose illustrations are an undeniable inspiration for tarot cards (and Star Wars; watch the prequels and you’ll find art nouveau touches all over it). If you’re intrigued, you can hear Lucas Museum curator Erin M. Curtis, writer and scholar Gloria Arjona, and artist and tarot reader Marcella Kroll discuss the history of tarot and Lotería imagery during the event.
