Restaurants across L.A. are reopening, but that’s no reason to shy away from making your own delicious food—especially when it’s for a great cause.
On Friday, Silver Lake’s casual vegan gem Jewel is kicking off a new virtual cooking series with local chefs that’ll raise funds for various causes, and this first event is all about Jamaican food. Tune in to the restaurant’s accounts on Facebook and Instagram Live, starting at 5:30pm, for a donation-based class led by Jewel chef Jasmine Shimoda and special guest Kat Williams, the chef and force behind Jamaican-food pop-up Noisy Library.
In the spirit of Jewel, this class will be completely plant-based, teaching you how to make Jamaican jerk yuba; plantains; stewed peas; and greens for a totally vegan experience.
While the class itself is free, donations will be split between the Okra Project—which directly provides home-cooked meals and other resources to the Black trans community—and an organization of Williams’s choosing, giving us all a community-driven way to learn and feed ourselves while also feeding others.
