Back before home movies were captured solely on your phone, preserving family memories involved handling actual film. If you’re still a fan of 8mm, 16mm or Super 8 film—or a novice interested in small-gauge films—then head to this free event at the Academy Museum, which celebrates the role of home movies and amateur films in the history of cinema. It starts off with a presentation where you’ll learn about the history of these film formats, then get a chance to try projecting them yourself, followed by a tactile filmmaking workshop where you’ll make “cameraless” films. Finally, an hour-long screening of Hollywood home movies from the Academy Film Archive will give a behind-the-scenes look at the lives of filmmakers and movie stars from 1928 to 1955, set to live musical accompaniment.
