We may complain about the oversaturation of Instagram-friendly funhouses, but whenever 29Rooms rolls into town, we take notice. Yes, it’s full of whimsical, colorful selfie opportunities, but it regularly executes them with an admirable level of polish—and often with something meaningful to say.
29Rooms will bring its “Expand Your Reality” tour—the event’s third L.A. iteration—to the Beverly Venue by HD Buttercup (4315 Beverly Blvd), on the border of Koreatown and East Hollywood, from November 8 to 17.
True to its name, the limited-time attraction from Refinery 29 features 29 spaces that’ve been created in collaboration with brands, artists, actors and non-profit groups. That brands part maybe deserves a second mention, as 29Rooms typically isn’t shy about some of its corporate tie-ins—but we’ve found that previous editions balance its bombastic elements with genuinely lovely, low-key installations, as well as plenty of rooms that advocate for tolerance, diversity, body positivity and inclusivity. Though a full list should arrive closer to the event, L.A.’s collaborators already include Kali Uchis, the Hoodwitch, Dan Lam, Carlota Guerrero and the ACLU, among others.
When the touring installation hit the Midwest over the summer, our friends at Time Out Chicago took a look and singled out six experiences to look forward to. Most of them were actually ones we explored when 29Rooms visited L.A. last year—but we’re told that, in addition to some returning fan-favorites, we can expect new rooms and more interactive experiences that’ll separate the L.A. version from this summer’s experience.
Timed tickets are already on sale. A general admission ticket, which gives you two and a half hours to explore the pop-up, starts at $25. And we’d suggest moving on this one pretty soon; the pop-up has quickly sold out in previous.
In the meantime, check out our video from last year’s event:
