The world’s largest beach cleanup ever will be attempted at Venice Beach next week

On Saturday, September 19, Venice Beach could be home to a new world record. Five eco-conscious Southern California brands—KOOK, Opolis Optics, OoMee, Deep Blue and Akasha Superfoods—are joining forces to host what they hope will be the world’s largest beach cleanup. Running from 4pm to 8pm at Lifeguard Tower 18, this free event aims to rally over 2,000 volunteers to tackle ocean garbage and set a new Guinness World Record.

What started as a modest local effort quickly evolved into a massive community call-to-action. Each host business brings a unique angle to sustainability, spanning ocean-safe skincare, natural-fiber streetwear, recycled eyewear, marine botanical supplements and ocean-inspired beverages. Together with community partners like the Love Button Global Movement and Next Fun Thing, the organizers are creating an atmosphere where environmental action is accessible, engaging and fun.

To boost visibility, the organizers launched an eccentric 50-day campaign to recruit L.A. DJ Diplo to perform at the after-party. Their playful efforts have featured everything from rolling in seaweed and stunt doubles to a giant shrimp costume. The goal is about more than just entertainment—music brings people together, and cleaning up the coastline is even better with a background jam.

Coastal science nonprofit 7Seas Collective will manage data collection and sorting. As volunteers collect debris, waste will be brought to a dedicated sorting tent to be categorized, weighed and directed to the proper recycling or disposal streams.

Participants will enjoy free food, drinks and live music throughout the evening. While setting a official record is the ultimate target, the core mission is much broader: inspiring long-term environmental stewardship and bringing people together for the planet.

Registration is free and open to everyone via Partiful. While advance registration is encouraged to help organizers tally official headcounts for the Guinness World Record submission, walk-ins are fully welcome to check in on-site. Grab a bucket, bring a friend and head down to Tower 18 to be part of history.
