There are good doughnuts, and then there are “I’m willing to brave traffic and drive to the eastern edge of the county” doughnuts. For thousands of Angelenos, that fried pastry is the strawberry-stuffed perfection served at the Donut Man in Glendora. And now, for millions of us, it’s about to get a little bit closer.
The 47-year-old doughnut destination will open its second-ever location with a stall at Grand Central Market in February 2020.
According to the L.A. Times, which first reported the news, the Donut Man will occupy stall A-1, a long, slender space right near the Broadway entrance that was occupied by the now-shuttered liquor store Courage & Craft. That also puts it right now Eggslut, some come February, expect near-constant lines along that whole end of the market.
Though the Downtown L.A. spot will be easier to reach for most Angelenos (and, hey, it’s barely a block away from a Metro stop), there’ll still be some reasons to head to Glendora: While the original San Gabriel Valley shop is open 24/7, the Grand Central Market outpost will maintain hours of 7am to 10pm.
The Donut Man is most famous for its strawberry-filled doughnuts, a pastry rite of passage during the summertime strawberry season. But when we embarked on a citywide doughnut taste test, we found their foot-long tiger tails to be just as good. Meanwhile, we crowned their Bavarian creme, a chocolate frosted beauty with a healthy amount of rich, sweet cream stuffed inside, as the best cream-filled doughnut in all of L.A.
