There’s just something about ice cream, right?

Although the debut of any sort of new shop selling the sweet, cold treat would be exciting news, we’re ultra happy about this one: Rainbow Cone, an iconic Chicago ice cream shop and one of the very best of its kind out there, will officially open three locations in Southern California later this year.

Eater reports that the 98-year-old parlor will first debut at 9527 Valley View Street in Orange County’s Cypress neighborhood, followed by two other address that “will be announced after the leases are signed.”

Just in case you’re not familiar with it, the brand is known for serving stacked ice cream “slices”—five per cone!—that’ll likely remind you of, well, a rainbow. The featured flavors usually include, chocolate, orange sherbet, Palmer House (a vanilla delight with cherries and walnuts), pistachio and strawberry.

Rainbow Cone first debuted in Chicago back in 1926 but now operates 13 total locations around the United States, including shops in Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin. Eater reports that more will soon hit Tennessee and Texas, as well. This pretty massive effort at expansion follows the company’s acquisition by the Buona Companies, a Chicago restaurant group known for focusing on Italian beef.

It’s not every day that a popular Chicago destination graces the West Coast—though Rainbow Cone certainly won’t be the first. Back in 2019, Gino’s East, one of Chicago’s most iconic deep-dish pizzas, debuted in L.A. And not too far from the future Rainbow Cone outpost in Cypress, you can grab hot dogs from the lone SoCal Portillo’s location.
