We’re sure that Angelenos will not be surprised to hear this, but Los Angeles was just ranked the ninth most expensive city in the world, according to data company Numbeo’s annual Cost of Living Index by City.
We’re in pretty good company, though, if that’s any consolation: Seven out of the 10 cities mentioned in the survey are in the U.S—including New York, Chicago, Boston and San Francisco, among others. Congratulations to us for spending lavishly to live modestly in the great United States of America. Woohoo?
To come up with its ranking, the data company looked at a few different factors, including cost of living, average rent prices, groceries, restaurant prices, local purchasing power and more.
The list was topped by two Swiss cities: Geneva and Zurich, landing in the number one and two spots respectively. The title pays off in those cases, though, as both towns are constantly referred to as some of the top places to live for quality of life.
The only other non-American entry in this specific new ranking is Reykavik, in Iceland.
Does it cost a lot to live in Los Angeles? Clearly. Is it worth the price tag? Absolutely.
