Although Angelenos love to hate the tourist trap that is the Hollywood Walk of Fame, we must admit that we appreciate when a deserving celebrity is granted one of the iconic stars. And next year, a few would-be owners of the legendary stars will fit that bill.
Earlier this week, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce announced the Hollywood Walk of Fame class of 2025 during a press conference at Ovation Hollywood. In total, the organization named 36 entertainers spanning age groups and industries, including actresses Fran Drescher and Jessica Chastain; TV icon Bill Nye and South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone; musical gurus Depeche Mode, Green Day, Busta Rhymes, the B-52s and Prince (a posthumous honoring that we can’t believe was not bestowed upon the late star until now); sports maverick David Beckham and more.
How are the Hollywood Walk of Fame stars chosen?
If you’re anything like us, you’re probably curious about the process involved in giving out these iconic street stars to all sorts of celebrities.
Generally speaking, anyone can submit a nomination to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce Walk of Fame selection committee, an organization body that fields through an average of 200 proposals yearly. According to Jet magazine, the nominees must have a minimum of five years of experience in whatever industry they are being mentioned in alongside a history of “charitable contributions.”
In June, the agency selects that year’s picks, which always include a single posthumous award.
Keep in mind that, contrary to popular belief, selected celebrities actually have to pay for the star. In 2023, that cost neared $75,000. Since many of the nominations are made in tandem with an A-lister’s upcoming project, bigger companies behind said efforts often actually foot that bill (think a record company or a film studio, for example).
