Helms Bakery has officially reopened after 55 years

The former Olympic supplier has returned to its old Culver City space under the supervision of an impressive lineup of chefs.

Although Angelenos have been dreaming about the reopening of the iconic Helms Bakery since 2012, when Father’s Office and Lukshon chef Sang Yoon announced his intention to re-debut the storied bakery, it took until today for the reboot to turn into reality. Helms Bakery is now officially open at its original location at 3280 Helms Avenue in Culver City. 

For the uninitiated and L.A. transplants, here’s a refresher: The bakery, launched in 1931, was the original supplier for the 1932 summer Olympic Sames—which is why the business’s logo actually features the instantly recognizable Olympic rings. The space eventually closed down in 1969, though the complex where it used to reside (and the recognizable neon sign) has lived on since with a mix of restaurants and furniture stores.

Today, Helms Bakery 2.0 has taken over 14,000-square-feet in the complex, as reported by Eater. The outlet reports that the prepared and savory foods are being prepared under the supervision of executive chef Nanor Harboyan, of Destroyer as well as large-scale operations at Walt Disney World. Breads and pastries fall under head baker Jacob Fraijo.

As seen on Instagram, patrons will get to order from a vast array of European and American food options, from cherry pies to egg sandwiches, chicken pot pies and prepared meals alongside a variety of drinks served from a beverage counter.

“Everything’s going to be fresh, small batch. If we run out, we replace it,” Yoon said to Eater. “When you’re open throughout the day, you don’t want to be looking at the same pastries. You want to have some new reason to come in.”

Clearly, there will be loads of reasons for locals to go in.
