Of course—if you’re using music fest fan logic—Frank Ocean would have to be the surprise headliner at 2019’s edition of Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival. The lineup had a big question mark slot on the poster, and since Tyler, the Creator curates the hip-hop fest, it only makes sense that he’d turn to his Odd Future collaborator.
And so, that’s the only way to explain how Drake—one of the most commercially successful rappers of all time, as Tyler points out—could find himself walking off stage about 20 minutes into his surprise headlining set. “I’m here for you tonight,” he said amid lukewarm fan reactions. “If you want to keep going, I will keep going tonight.” That maybe wasn’t the best question to ask judging by the loud yells of “no” he was met with. “Well, look, it’s been love,” he said, and walked off stage, to be met with unrequited “We want Frank” chants moments later.
But there were so many more feel-good moments to Camp Flog Gnaw, which brought carnival rides and music stages to the startlingly scenic top deck parking lot at Dodger Stadium. This year’s blindingly star-flecked lineup included the likes of 21 Savage, Solange, YG (who brought out Stormy Daniels for his hit “Fuck Donald Trump”), Brockhampton, Juice WRLD, H.E.R., Daniel Caesar, Blood Orange and, of course, Tyler, the Creator himself.
