The collection of eccentric cosmetics heirs and philanthropists Dorothy and JB Nethercutt makes for a striking pair of museums. The San Sylmar site is home to a collection of old, fancy but functional objects, all in working order: everything from gorgeous old cars and Steuben Glass hood ornaments to French furniture and automated musical instruments. Among the sporadic events are recitals on the Mighty Wurlitzer theater organ. Shorts and jeans are prohibited out of respect for the fancy merchandise. The Nethercutt Museum, meanwhile, provides a handsome home for 100 of the Nethercutts' 230-plus classic cars: Daimlers, Lincolns, Packards and Duesenbergs, all kept in immaculate order.
