In 2002, we were transfixed by the underage spelling bee contestants in Spellbound, and now, documentary film chronicles the quest to prove victorious in another breed of teen competition. Trade in another evening of Netflix documentaries for the LA premiere of Bible Quiz, a story that follows seventeen-year-old Mikayla, as she trains for the National Bible Quiz Championship—a suprisingly dog-eat-dog tournament that pits evangelical youngsters against one another to prove themselves the most well-versed, so to speak. The flick confronts stereotypes of growing up ultra-religious in American today, shedding an unfiltered light on these often ostracized teens, as they reckon with faith, identity and sexuality. Bible Quiz stops at Downtown Independent for a week-long sojourn.
