Bagels and babkas and Bubbe's chopped liver—this is the right way to brunch.
On December 17, San Francisco's popular Jewish deli, Wise Sons, is popping up at Genghis Cohen for a brunch extravaganza. For $40 per person, you'll be able to nosh on Bubbe's chopped liver and schmaltz toast, a seasonal veggie plate, Chinese chicken salad and a slew of entrées: winter vegetable hash, open-faced smoked salmon on a sesame bagel, a house-smoked pastrami reuben and more. For dessert, there's all the chocolate babka you can handle.
Seatings start at 9am, and reservations can be made on Open Table. While the $40 doesn't include cocktails, you'll still be able to order boozy beverages like a Cel-Raymos (gin, house-made Cel-Ray soda, citrus and cream) or a Bloody Mary (vodka, tomato juice, pickle juice, Dijon mustard, horseradish and celery salt). Coffee Manufactory coffee and Pressed Juicery cold-pressed juice will also be available.
Last year, Genghis Cohen changed ownership, and since then the Fairfax staple has been making some slow but noticeable changes. Yael Vengroff, bar director at the Spare Room, has been revamping the cocktail list to feature some fun concoctions, like the brightly colored East Broadway Sour with Chinese 5 spice and a red wine float. But it's still a place where you can find Americanized Chinese food and, on most nights, plenty of live music.
