For a second there over the weekend, we could have lost Union Station. Instead, thanks to the work of 82 Los Angeles firefighters, the building was saved and the trains continue to run on time.
The fire broke out around 5:20am on Saturday in a rolling trash dumpster outside the train station, not far from the main entrance. What exactly caused it to spark remains unclear, according to a press statement from the fire department. It also is still not known if the fire was accident or arson; an investigation is currently underway to get to the bottom of that.
The LAFD firefighters were able to respond quickly, and managed to have the fire completely contained and extinguished in less than half an hour. The Art Deco architectural landmark was unscathed by the incident and nobody was injured.
All we can say is, thank you firefighters!
