The Standing Rock Reservation water protectors recently celebrated a victory from the Dakota Access Pipeline Project (#noDAPL), but that doesn't mean the movement is no longer in need of aid. The fight is far from over, and Kyp Malone of TV on the Radio wants to make sure the Standing Rock community receives continued support. "I greet the news of the Obama administration's denial of DAPL with a glad and cautious optimism," said Malone in an official statement, "but my feelings are tempered by the fact that there is still so much work to do."
To that end, TV On the Radio and Goldenvoice will be hosting a benefit concert, We Rock With Standing Rock, at the Fonda on Sunday, December 18. They'll be performing along with more than 17 artists including Fiona Apple, Devendra Banhart, Sky Ferreira, Moses Sumney, Benjamin Booker and more. All proceeds from the show will go the the Official Oceti Sakowin Camp (Seven Council Fires) Fund, Native Children's Survival, the Seeding Sovereignty Project and GiveLove.
"Even without the threat of an oil pipeline poisoning the water, life on reservations is so often one of deprivation, unconscionably low life expectancy, infant mortality and adolescent suicide, all pointing to the continued need for us to stand in support of First Nations people," Malone says. "We need to keep the light shining on this."
Tickets for the benefit concert will be on sale here Friday, December 9 at 10am; $25 for GA floor tickets, $35 for reserved balcony seats. To learn more about We Rock With Standing Rock, check out the Facebook event page here.
