For what seems like forever now (ok, since October 2014), Danny Trejo's new taco restaurant has stood under construction at the corner of La Brea Ave and Sycamore Ave, drawing theories from passersby on what the Machete actor's first culinary venture will look like. Now, we only have a week left to wonder. The taqueria is soft-opening next week, bringing a selection of tacos, homemade salsas, horchata and plenty of Trejo-branded merchandise to expectant Angelenos.
While a menu hasn't officially been released yet, the LA Times reports that chef Daniel Mattern (Cooks County) has designed the food lineup at Trejo's Tacos, featuring 10 tacos that include a fried avocado version and a black pepper tofu version—the eatery has a surprising selection of vegan and vegetarian options. There are also some steadfast classics like street corn, as well as a shrimp and red snapper ceviche. Anything left over at the end of the day gets donated to a local homeless shelter.
Aside from a solid menu, Trejo is using the restaurant to sling his other food and beverage ventures: Trejo's coffee, roasted by Zona Rosa Coffee in Pasadena; and Trejo's Cerveca, brewed in the Downtown Arts District. Beanies, shirts and totes are available for purchase, all with Trejo's menacing mug plastered on them, and there's already talk about another location—in Hollywood, next to Big Wang's. Let's just hope we don't have to wait another year and a half for it to open.
An official soft open date has yet to be announced, but we'll let you know as soon as we do!
