Everyone loves a melty, gooey grilled cheese. All the buttery, cheesy goodness on sliced bread. Except, wait, what about vegans? Well, it turns out that they can have their own special day with a grilled cheese this weekend.
The First Annual Vegan Grilled Cheese Competition heads to Culver City on Sunday for four hours of grilled cheese fun—with none of the dairy.
Taking place at the Sage Organic Vegan Bistro, there will be 10 chefs preparing their take on the classic sandwich, according to Eater LA. Samples will be handed out by the plant-loving likes of Café Gratitude and Sage, but also non-vegan grilled cheese specialists like Grilled Cheese Truck and Blind Barber.
Attendees will be given ballots to vote for their favorite sandwich and some vegan celebrity judges have been brought in to offer their expert opinions, including NFL defensive lineman David Carter, better known to his 72,000 Instagram followers as “The 300 Pound Vegan.”
Each ticket includes tastes of all the sammies as well as complimentary beer or kombucha. If the samples don’t fully satisfy your ravenous vegan hunger, Sage Bistro will also be offering special deals on additional food and beverages inside the restaurant.
All of the proceeds of the event are going to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals to benefit their work in animal welfare.
