We curate an LA weekend itinerary of the city's best concerts, culture and cuisine, every week, just for you.
Friday
Bring your appetite for all things deep fried as the LA County Fair opens today. Expect tons of carnival rides and belly bombs, alongside new additions this year like a dinosaur exhibition and an indoor ice skating rink.
Travel to a galaxy far, far away—or just to the Hollywood Bowl—for John Williams: Maestro of the Movies. The famed composer is conducting the LA Phil in the score to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, with a selection of movie classics to open the show conducted by fellow film composer David Newman.
If you're in more of a dancing mood, head to the Music Center for the final night of Dance Downtown. This free, joyous mashup of live music and dance lessons ends its summertime run with tonight's disco finale.
Saturday
Indulge your foodie sensibilities at the Taste, the annual weekend-long food fest from the LA Times. Head to Paramount Studios for this afternoon's "Field to Fork" tasting and demonstration experience, or stick around into the evening for the swanky "Dinner with a Twist," hosted by Ray Garcia, Jonathan Gold, Jenn Harris and Michael Lay.
If you'd rather not plunk down the cash, then pick up some free food instead at the Slater's 50/50 Bacon Hot Dog Giveaway. The bacon-and-beef specialists are giving away their new bacon-stuffed hot dog for free from 11am to 5pm; you'll find the closest location in Pasadena.
Roll out a blanket at Hollywood Forever Cemetery as Cinespia screens The Birds—which should pair perfectly with the cemetery's noisy resident peacocks. If you've already seen the Hitchcock thriller this summer, then Street Food Cinema is showing Grease at Will Rogers State Historic Park and The Devil Wears Prada at Glendale Central Park, while Eat|See|Hear screens The Hateful Eight at the Autry.
Sunday
Take a plunge into the pool at SkyBar for the summer's final installment of Rhondesia. This pool party from the founders of A Club Called Rhonda couples that party's anything goes atmosphere with "big heat, thick beats and the softest sheets."
Peruse the Arts District's gallery-meets-museum Hauser Wirth & Schimmel on the final day of Revolution in the Making: Abstract Sculpture by Women, 1947–2016. The inaugural exhibition includes post-war and contemporary works from the likes of Ruth Asawa, Lee Bontecou, Eva Hesse, Yayoi Kusama, Hannah Wilke and more.
Make your way to A Noise Within for a staging of Arcadia. Fall in love with Tom Stoppard’s 1993 romantic look at our never-ending curiosity and quest for knowledge.
Find a spot atop Barnsdall Art Park during the kickoff of its Outdoor Movie Nights series. The screenings and sips fundraiser starts with a Bowie tribute night, including a screening of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars and a curated selection of wines from San Antonio Winery.
Grab a late-night snack at the summer finale of 626 Night Market. Come hungry to Santa Anita Park, where more than 150 Asian street food vendors will be steaming, frying and roasting up delectable bites.
Monday
You hardworking Angelenos have earned a day off, so go ahead and relax on Monday. It's Labor Day—as if you needed any reminder of a three-day weekend—so things are pretty quiet around town. That said, there are still plenty of Labor Day weekend events that just might peel us off the couch.
Head down to Hermosa Beach as the city hosts its biannual Fiesta Hermosa. Strip down to your skivvies and roam the 400-plus stalls at this waterfront street fair.
Film buffs, unite for the Cinecon Classic Film Festival. This cinephile dream assembles screenings of rare and unusual old-school films at the Egyptian Theatre; the weekend wraps up with the 1942 Abbott and Costello flick Who Done It?.
