Thanksgiving is one of the most delightful times of the year, but as much as we love gathering around the table with loved ones, there is some killer traffic out there on the roads. Directions app Waze wants to help you be as strategic as possible, so they’ve released their predictions of the best and worst moments to hit the road this weekend.

Contrary to popular opinion—or what you might be telling your boss right this minute—leaving the office early to hit the roads ‘before the rush’ is kind of a joke. Everybody else has the same idea. In fact, Waze predicts that the peak travel time for the whole weekend will be 3pm today.

To actually outsmart the crowds, hang out a little bit later than you might have thought and start your journey after 5pm today. By then, things should be starting to lighten up. Or just get up early tomorrow and drive on Thanksgiving itself, a day they classify as a ‘great day to drive.’

On the way home, Sunday is likely to be a snarl at pretty much any time. If you can sneak out Saturday night or put the drive off until Monday, you’ll likely have a much smoother ride.

As for that massive traffic jam on the 405 last night? Waze warned us that things would be slammed until 9pm on Tuesday, so they were right on that one. And, if we can avoid getting stuck in that type of mess, we’ll trust them from here on out.
