There are problems in the world—and then there are what you might call #LAProblems. The latter would be the ones that might involve things like spoiled celebs, crystal healers and definitely juice bars. To share those very special concerns with friends local or far-flung, artist Suzy Mae has crafted a postcard series where she illustrates some particularly choice ‘overheard’ moments.
Mae started Only OK in LA as a Twitter project where she shared some of the slightly-insane, yet oh-so-real moments she found herself experiencing after moving from Portland, Ore, to Los Angeles. A year into living here she was trying to leave an edit house parking lot and found herself blocked in by Hollywood hot-shot Michael Bay. The inconvenience caused her to run late for a tanning appointment that had been set up for her by her personal trainer. When she told her longtime-Angeleno friends about the over-the-top scenario, she found they barely registered it as ridiculous. That was when the ‘new normal’ of her crazy LA life truly hit her.
The postcard series takes some of the most popular Twitter posts and adds hand-drawn illustrations to evocative out-of-context phrases like, “I’ve been thirty for eight years” or “I’ll have you know, my dog is a fantastic actor.” One that Mae admits came straight from her own mouth? “That’s exactly what my crystal guy says.”
When she’s not working on Only OK in LA, Suzy Mae also creates zines, freelances as an advertising strategist, is working on an animated series and is a rapper and aspiring improv comic, which is about the most perfect ‘only in LA’ job description we think she could have.
