If you saw some goats hanging around Downtown yesterday as you walked by Angels Flight, you weren't hallucinating. One of the best DTLA summertime traditions is officially underway as the hungry creatures do their yearly duty to eat the weeds away and naturally fertilize the land while they're at it. They keep the grounds looking neat (and cute), which is especially important this year, as we all know that the funicular that has appeared in popular films like 500 Days of Summer and La La Land is set to reopen by Labor Day.
Hiring out goats for brush control is a pretty common practice in Souther California. According to the OC Register, the heavy rains we've experienced since October have "made plants grow like crazy." The animals help prevent fire by munching down on "shrubs, brush, grass and other plants for regular landscaping maintenance and to create defensible buffers of low-brush areas around houses and other buildings for wildlife protection." Letting goats take on this task is the most cost-effective and eco-friendly way, since they don't pollute and don't require any machinery.
The goats will be munching around Angels Flight for about a week, so you have plenty of time to catch them in action. Meanwhile, check out the best goat snaps so far on Instagram.
