Maybe it's just the contemporary art world, but the Broad seems to have a thing for faces, from its selfie-inducing installations to the self-portrait-filled Cindy Sherman exhibition. You can add its next special exhibition to that list.
Creature, an examination of different approaches to figuration and self-representation, will open at the Broad on November 5. The free exhibition will replace the ticketed Cindy Sherman show on the first floor, though the main gallery on the third floor will continue to host a rotating mix of contemporary works.
To answer your most pressing question: No, Yayoi Kusama's Infinity Mirrored Room isn't going anywhere. The insanely popular selfie chamber will remain open during the installation process as well as the duration of the exhibition.
While the third floor galleries will continue to focus on the post-war art world with a heavy emphasis on Pop Art, the first floor Creature show will feature more than 50 mostly post-'80s works. Local artist Thomas Houseago's imposing 15-foot-tall Giant Figure (Cyclops) sculpture will sit at the exhibition's entrance, where it'll make its U.S. debut.
The rest of the exhibition will compile a range of human figures, from Jean-Michel Basquiat's primitivist profiles to Alex Israel's selfie-shaped canvases. Creature will feature works from more than 25 other artists, including Leon Golub, Jenny Holzer, Jeff Koons, Georg Baselitz, Takashi Murakami, Andy Warhol and more.
Creature will also mark a break from ticketed exhibitions for the Broad. Whereas Cindy Sherman: Imitation of Life—which runs through October 2—requires a $12 ticket, Creature will be included in the museum's free admission. The exhibition will run through March 19, 2017, after which another free to-be-announced installation will takes its place.
If it's been a while since you've visited the Broad, then you should know that the museum has tweaked its ticketing system. On the first of each month, timed reservations for the following month will become available for free. Of course, you're always welcome to wait in the standby line as well—just maybe check the wait time before you head out.
