Take a peek at this shady, green, tree-filled park coming to DTLA

Progress is happening on the FAB Park project planned for First Ave and Broadway in Downtown L.A. and cool, new renderings out today show even more green space and shade than before.

The updated design from Mia Lehrer + Associates (designers of Vista Hermosa, among other local projects) show more canopies and large tree plantings added to the design after conversations with DTLA residents who worried that the previous, more open plazas and walkways wasn’t quite green enough.

Now there will be more and larger native plants sprinkled throughout the two-acre park, including a grassy meadow in what was previously a small creek feature.

Another addition in the latest renderings is the addition of a rooftop terrace on top of the 100,000-square-foot dining pavilion. When the park opens, the plan is that two restaurants will operate in the space, but who the vendors will be has yet to be selected.

The restaurant pavilion’s building and the large, creatively-shaped shade structures are designed by Rem Koolhaas’s studio OMA (though Koolhaas is not directly involved in this project). The pavilion will also feature an amphitheater where we can’t wait to enjoy plenty of summertime concerts to come.

Along with these updates comes a small delay in the opening date. Originally, we were expecting a 2019 opening for the site, but new timelines have a ground breaking next year and public opening pushed back to 2020, according to Architect’s Newspaper.

FAB Park—named for its location at First and Broadway—will sit directly adjacent to Grand Park, across Spring Street from Los Angeles City Hall.
