Square One at the Boathouse—part of the Square One Dining family—has been an Echo Park Lake staple since it opened in August 2013. It's where families stop off for coffee and hot chocolate before getting on a paddle boat, or where you can grab a really great bowl of cheddar grits, to be eaten lakeside on a sunny morning.
But the beloved eatery is soon closing, making way for a new spot called Curate Café that will open in the same location. The reason behind the change? According to The Eastsider, Square One wanted to give less than its current 5 percent of revenue to the Department of Recreations and Parks. A new operator, the Santa Fe-based MTI Investments, has offered 9 percent of their revenue to the city, leading the city's park commissioners to vote in favor of MTI. The new café will serve breakfast, organic beef burgers, salads and more (though no word on whether grits will be involved!).
If you're bummed about losing Square One at the Boathouse, there are other Square One locations you can visit (Square One Fountain and Square One Silver Lake). Sure, the other two don't have that Echo Park Lake view—but sometimes you have to make sacrifices.
