As summer rolls in, we simply want to spend all of our evenings outdoors. Thankfully, the Ford Theatres' lineup of globe-trotting, genre-spanning programming is once again returning to its refreshed, scenic Hollywood home, topped by tap dancer and choreographer Savion Glover and singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright.
To break in its completed Cahuenga Pass confines, the Ford has also teamed up with the Lincoln Center Festival and New York’s Apollo Theater, the Music Center, LA Opera and the Skirball Cultural Center for its 10-part "IGNITE @ THE FORD!" series.
Of particular note, the theater has partnered with the Music Center for that association's recently launched On Location program. At the Ford Amphitheatre, that means three nights in August of performances by contemporary dance company Aszure Barton & Artists; dance from Jacob Jonas the Company paired with the experimental music of Tim Hecker; and a special performance by Rufus Wainwright.
The grounds John Anson Ford Amphitheatre date back to 1920, when the spot began its life as the summertime home for The Pilgrimage Play. The theater we know today was built in 1931 and has been entertaining audiences ever since—save for a nearly two-year closure as part of a massive overhaul of the property. That project mostly wrapped up last year in time for an abbreviated season, but this summer marks the full debut of its landscape, dining and acoustic enhancements.
Tickets for the 2017 summer season at the Ford Theatres, which runs from July 15 through October 16, are on sale now.
