The tragic shooting in Orlando—and a thwarted threat in Santa Monica—colored the typically carnival-like atmosphere of LA Pride 2016 with one of reflection on Sunday. Festival attendees and parade participants, amid heightened security, began the festival's final morning with a moment of silence along the entire parade route.
But this year's LA Pride was not a somber event; the annual LGBTQ fest was still a chance to celebrate the diversity, resilience and courage of Angelenos from all walks of life.
The event has taken on an increasingly summer music festival-like feel, with sets from the likes of Carly Rae Jepson, Charli XCX, Krewella, Faith Evans, Da Brat, Gavin Turek and Shamir. On Sunday, activists, city officials and supporters of all sorts marched along Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood, many of them holding up signs to show their solidarity with the victims in Orlando.
