If you've stepped outside recently, you know that Southern California is in the middle of a mind-scrambling heatwave. According to the National Weather Service, today was the third consecutive record-breaking day. Can you believe that only about a week ago we were complaining about the cold and wind?
Today, Los Angeles peaked at 85 degrees, beating the old record of 83 degrees set back in 1988. Tuesday reached 90 degrees in Westwood, and on Monday the heat climbed to 89 degrees at LAX, according to the LA Times.
Sure, this week's heat has come nowhere close to what we endured back in October, when temperatures reached the triple digits in what was described as the "worst heatwave in 25 years." But part of the reason that these past few days have seemed so extreme is because we've repeatedly warned that El Niño will bring torrential rain, and yet, we have only seen sparse precipitation. Still, the LA Times reports that this heat is El Niño. A high pressure system is sitting on Southern California, keeping the storms away.
So when will it end? Sunday's LA Marathon runners will still have to endure some intense heat since the trend is expected to peak on Monday and cool off by the middle of next week. Until then, stay safe and stay cool! Beach, anyone?
