If you still need any coaxing to get into the holiday spirit, may we suggest an evening with comedians, marionettes and ice cream at L.A.'s most beloved—and by far the coolest—puppet theater.
Maria Bamford, Charlyne Yi and Eddie Pepitone top the lineup of comedians who'll lend their voices to tonight's "A Cavalcade of Christmas!" at the Bob Baker Marionette Theater. Bamford, known for her understated presence and wickedly good voice work, will play Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer in a live reading of the Christmas classic.
The reading will follow a performance of highlights from the theater's vintage seasonal classic, "Holiday Spectacular!" which makes room for Santa, a magical star and Dickensian characters—all in puppet form, of course.
The rest of the live-reading lineup includes comedians Dana Gould, Ron Lynch and Chris Fairbanks, actress Janet Varney, Mr. Show co-star John Ennis, original SNL cast member Laraine Newman and more surprise guests. SpongeBob SquarePants and Mr. Show composer Eban Schletter will provide live musical accompaniment.
Show up early dressed in holiday evening attire for a pre-show reception. The evening begins at 7pm with festive drinks and snacks, followed by some musical holiday cheer from the L.A. Chamber Music Co-operative. A revue of classic Bob Baker puppet shows begins at 8pm, followed by the live reading at 9pm (and some post-show ice cream).
Tickets cost $40 and are still available, with all proceeds benefitting the historic theater.
