If you want to really relax this weekend, stay right where you’re at. There’s no need to travel into the city if you live in the Valley, there's plenty to do right here. So instead of spending more Uber or gas money, convince your friends to join you in one (or all) of these activities—and if you have time, grab dinner at one of the Valley's best restaurants, like Barrel & Ashes or Girasol. You’ll have so much fun that the next time you agree to hang out, they will suggest coming to you.

Saturday morning hike

O'Melveny Park: Forget Runyon and the Hollywood sign—O’Mulveny is perhaps the most underrated hike in the city. There are multiple trail options that range from easy to challenging. The climb up the mountain can take well over an hour, or there is an easier loop suitable for walking. Take the more secluded Grotto Trail in the springtime and you’ll see sunny, yellow flowers everywhere you look. There is a spacious park area with bathrooms, picnic tables and free parking. 17300 Sesnon Blvd, Granada Hills

Fryman Canyon: Fryman Canyon is massive; it stretches across 122 acres of the eastern Santa Monica Mountains. The Betty B Dearing Cross Mountain Trail is the most notable part of the park, offering some magnificent views and a reasonably simple hike that should shock Friday night's drinks right out of you. 8401 Mulholland Dr, Studio City

Drinks

San Fernando Brewing CompanyCommemorate your morning hike with a brew named in its honor: The O'Melveny Red Ale. The spacious, rustic atmosphere at this Valley brewery makes for a great afternoon hangout. 425 Park Ave, San Fernando

The Local Peasant: The first impression of this bar is that it has a cool hipster feel. Upon closer inspection, you’ll realize its perfection actually makes it rare and not at all stuffy. The music seems to sense exactly what you’re in the mood to hear, and the environment is intimate enough for a date and lively enough for a group of friends. 14058 Ventura Blvd, Sherman Oaks

Fun

GlowZone LA: Glow-in-the-dark mini golf? That detail alone is all you need to anticipate a multitude of fun. Fulfill your inner child at GlowZone LA with glow-in-the-dark activities, including rock climbing, mini golf and laser tag. 6051 De Soto Ave, Woodland Hills

Valley Performing Arts CenterCatch a show at CSUN’s performing arts center. A variety of events including lectures, theater and concerts fill the upcoming calendar. Buy tickets now for next month’s Dreamgirls or to see singer-songwriter Jewel perform. 18111 Nordhoff St, Northridge

Japanese GardenThe Japanese Garden in Balboa Park is perfect for a sunny day, which is practically every day in LA. Plus, the paved loop around Balboa Park, which is five miles long, is an optimal place to get in a weekend run or leisurely walk. The entire loop is close to five miles long. 6100 Woodley Ave, Van Nuys

Dessert

Cream: This is the Valley’s version of Hollywood’s Milk. Freshly baked cookies hug a creamy layer of ice cream and the creation tastes like a dream. Mix and match any flavor, or get the “mini” cookie if you can’t decide and order two (or three) ice cream sandwiches. 9000 Reseda Blvd, Northridge

Ring Baked Tofu Donuts: Tofu as an ingredient in baked goods is a concept that shouldn’t be so obscure. The texture and slightly smaller shape of the creations at this spot are not identical to your typical doughnut. It’s more similar to a sponge-cake, but still delicious. The lemon and matcha flavors are incredible and the red velvet will suit any palate. If you’re feeling adventurous, try the bacon maple. Your donut indulgence is ameliorated by the additional protein and real ingredients. 6800 Owensmouth Ave, Canoga Park

Sunday brunch

Main Kitchen Cafe: Your first bite of the salmon eggs Benedict will win you over. The hearty, chewy texture of the “Squaw” bread is a great complement to any meal. Sit at the countertop that overlooks the open kitchen for entertainment while you wait for your food. The head chef’s skilled and efficient cooking techniques are mesmerizing to watch. 17013 Chatsworth St, Granada Hills

Humble Bee: Humble Bee’s menu features seasonal ingredients and bold pairings. Tip: order one of the weekend specials and you can’t go wrong. On the way out, grab a menu for their other establishment, Humble Bee Pie, to have an organic pizza delivered for dinner. 17321 Saticoy St, Northridge
